I attended a gala last year that had a live illustrator and that painting is now framed and sitting on the mantle. In a world of massed produced art, real, hand-drawn and painted art is very valuable. I’d say this is the gen-z version of formal painted portraits we see in museums.

Now that you’re sold on this, let me introduce you to my friend Jasmin Faz, owner of Faz Creates Co.

She is insanely talented and truly one of the sweetest people to work with. With years of experience under her belt, her journey into live wedding illustration started back in 2019 while she was still in high school. Looking for a way to turn her creativity into something more, she began selling custom painted canvases. It was during that time that she realized not only how much people connected with her artwork, but also how much she loved creating meaningful, one-of-a-kind pieces for others to cherish.

Then in 2021, she was introduced to the world of live event painting. She describes her very first event as both exciting and challenging trying to balance painting while simultaneously interacting and networking with guests in a live setting. But over the years, through dedication and practice, she has truly mastered the art of creating beautiful guest portraits while still making everyone around her feel welcomed and cared for.

One of the things she loves most about live events is the unpredictability that comes with them. Last-minute changes and unexpected challenges are all part of the experience, and rather than feeling overwhelmed by them, she finds them exciting. As a natural critical thinker, she thrives in fast-paced environments where things are constantly evolving.

Today, she confidently calls this her dream job. Not only does she get to share her talent with wedding guests, but they also leave with a meaningful piece of artwork to keep forever. One of the most rewarding parts of her work is hearing how special her art made someone feel. She loves the opportunity to create, connect with people, and witness the joy on guests’ faces when they see their portraits come to life.

How Does Live Illustration Work at a Wedding?

The process is very easy for guests! The live illustration experience begins with photographing each guest and having them fill out a quick form with their contact information. This allows us to easily reconnect guests with their portraits if any artwork is accidentally left behind at the event.

From there, the artist begins hand-creating each piece, refering back to the photograph that was take of them. She starts with a pencil sketch on watercolor paper before layering in watercolor and ink details. Every illustration is thoughtfully crafted in real time, creating a unique keepsake your guests can take home and treasure.

The full illustration process takes approximately 8–10 minutes per person. Once their portrait is complete, guests can return to the table to pick up their custom artwork. It’s as easy as that! When I had my portrait done, it was a very similar experience and I couldn’t wait to see it!
